MELBOURNE - A GREAT PLACE FOR A HOLIDAY, Saturday, 28 June 2008
Written by Sue Craw
We dined at the Casino but really enjoyed the restaurants in the small alley ways and the great choice of food available in Melbourne. Bargaining with the Italian restaurants was fun. Its so interesting just to sit and watch people go by - people of all nationalities.
Going to the Theatre in Melbourne is a good thing to do. We went to see Priscilla while we were there - it was a great night.
Getting around was easy - we could walk to Flinders Street Station or catch one of the many trams. Our son is currently living in St Kilda so it was very special to visit him and to have a look at St Kilda beach and surrounds.
We travelled through the centre of Melbourne by boat one afternoon and it was great to look at the city from the river - the city never stops!
The shopping was fantastic - I love shopping at David Jones and Myers. Chadston Mall was a new find and we had a great day there - we literally shopped 'til we dropped that day. The Markets are an interesting place to visit too - many bargains to be got. It pays to take a spare suitcase so you can make the most of the shopping experience in Melbourne.
Overall, Melbourne can meet the needs of any travellers dreams. It's quick to travel by air from New Zealand and it's somewhere you can explore time and time again!!

If you love the rich history, culture, and architecture of Europe but cannot afford the time and money to get yourself over there, go to Melbourne cos it has it all..minus the price tag. Its also a great experience for people who love to eat, binge on sweets, and have a coffee while watching the day go by..

South Melbourne Market is another fascinating example of the cosmopolitan tastes of Melbourne's people. Fresh produce provides local buyers and visitors the best of fruit & vegetables, meat, fish, cheese and dairy foods and more.
The bright casino lights and leaping gas flares are within eyesight and are an irresistible attraction, even if only for a look at marble opulence and the glistening lights of evening show time action. A river view highlights the Aquarium on the Yarra River's edge and Eureka & Rialto Towers, Melbourne's tallest structures. Tourist access to viewing decks provides the vista of Melbourne's east to west landscape bordered by Port Phillip Bay to the south. The You Yangs, an indigenous name for a rocky outcrop, is to the west and a scan of the northern skyline foothills of the Great Dividing Range circles to Mt. Dandenong in the east.
Water taxis and ferries provide sight seeing enthusiasts with cruises from dockland history upstream to one of the world's greatest sporting meccas. The Melbourne Cricket Ground and Melbourne Park, home to Rod Laver Arena, host olympic sports, football of all types, basketball, athletics and tennis.
Beautiful garden walks or cycling south western pathways will provide testimony to the claim that Melbourne is the world's most liveable city.

It's a city to behold
From Kings Domain to Flinders St
Its beauty does unfold
I love to visit Melbourne
A jewel in this great land
From the Yarra to St Kilda pier
With beaches of snow white sand
I love to visit Melbourne
It's a multicultural paradise
From Lygon St to Chinatown
It's a city to entice
I love to visit Melbourne
Summer, Winter, Spring or Fall
Where men play Aussie Rules
The greatest game of all
Yes I love to visit Melbourne
This winter would be nice
I'd watch the Bombers play the Magpies
And I'd like to take the wife

Melbourne is also home to some fantastic dining, and you'll find some of the best food and drink in the oddest of places - alleyways. Don't think you need to stick to the main strip for a good feed, from Flinders to Bourke, make sure you take notice of the little nooks and crannies, you may come across a culinary surprise!
For a more obvious, and delicious, meal time destination, you can't go past Southbank. With the pretty views, the vibe, and the casino only down the road, Southbank's a great place for a group of friends to enjoy a few drinks and a big meal - especially if you hit up the Yum Cha!!!
If I could stand that extra bite in the winter time, I wouldn't hesitate moving myself and my footy scarf on down to Melbourne town!
