Tasmania's capital lies in the south-east of the state, near the mouth of the Derwent River at the foot of Mount Wellington. An intriguing blend of heritage and lifestyle, scenery and vibrant culture, Hobart is a city to remember. Cafés, restaurants and studios are abuzz with shoppers and visitors. Bustling markets, festivals, entertainment, history a flourishing arts scene, and fine restaurants with delicious fresh foods and famous beer are all found here in Hobart. |

HOBART-The Yummy Tummy spectacular Aussie Gem!, Saturday, 28 June 2008

Taswegians are arguably the friendliest folk in the nation, plus as an added bonus the surrounding towns and villages are full of interest and unique adventures.
Surrounded by Mountains and crystal clear waters Hobart city glistens like a precious gem overlooked by majestic Mount Wellington. My 13 year old daughter and I visited Hobart last winter, we are saving up our pennies for a return trip, a high priority when funds permit. Not that a visit to this amazing Australian city is at all expensive, quite the opposite, airfares, Hobart accommodation and food, are all extremely reasonably priced and are certainly more competitively priced than similar offerings in mainland Australian cities.
The historic Hobart waterfront and Salamanca market restaurant strip exude colonial architectural ambiance; plus the excellent food served in this district is the freshest and most delicious that we have ever tasted.
The surreal sensations experienced whilst standing on the wharf opposite looking out to a sea whereby the next land mass is the Antarctic, was a unique encounter for both myself and my daughter, a simple delight that cost nothing but lingers on in our memories.
If you are looking for nearby accommodation then charming Sandy Bay is located extremely conveniently to the city and is also on the waterfront. It boasts an excellent variety of accommodation from budget to superior suites, especially serviced apartments of a very high standard for the price.
We booked our 7 winter days of accommodation via wotif , then hired a small car to explore Hobart's surrounds. We visited the snow covered peak of Mount Wellington , quite an experience, and the quaint nearby towns. Attractions such as historic Richmond are close enough to visit without a stressful long drive, yet far enough way to provide a stark contrast to the 'yummy tummy' city's laid- back lifestyle. Hobart is such a wonderful city for four distinct reasons, firstly the scenery ... absolutely stunning, secondly the food... scrumptious, delectable, mouth watering, hope you get the picture, thirdly the people- genuinely friendly and hospitable folk, and finally affordable. We loved it and we hope that you will too!

Hobart, what's not to love?, Thursday, 10 July 2008

It was very easy to navigate city on foot and driving around is straightforward enough too as it has a simple grid system of one way streets, it was Australia Day weekend Jan08 and there was loads of good live music on everywhere from Salamanca place (80's cover band) to Battery point (Indie-country) and eclectic North Hobart for some blues/jazz. It also hosts a bi-annual Arts festival. Saturday morning we caught the very good market at Salamanca place and for dinner Da Angelo's Italian restaurant in Battery point was one of the best pizza's we've had in Oz.
As it's 205 years old it is one of Australia's oldest cities and Hobart is also birthplace of Errol Flynn and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, so how's that for impressive!
It also a great base for day trips to Port Arthur (100km) where you can go to Tasmanian Devil sanctuary on the way and stop off at some beautiful natural spots like the tessellated pavement , the Tasman Arch and the blow hole near the very quirky Dootown. Also easily accessible is the Huon Valley (90km) with the UNESCO world heritage listed Hartz Mountains and the Huon valley has many beautiful state forests including swing bridges and the Tahune airwalk - a metal walkway 48 metres above the ground and extends for .6 of a kilometre over the Tahune State Forest, Huon River and Picton River or alternatively you can ferry over the D'Entrecasteaux channel from Kettering to see the penguins on the fantastic Bruny Island, another beautiful spot.
Would definitely return.

Hobart - the one place on earth that captures all, Sunday, 29 June 2008

To get the most out of Tasmania I would recommended that you utilise the Hobart region as your home base... it truly has everything one could ever wish for. From here it is only a short drive to many of Tasmania's outstanding natural wonders. A 'must see' while in Tasmania would be the Derwent Valley, Mt Field National Park (Russell Falls will blow you away), Lake St Clair, the historic town of Richmond, the Port Arthur Historical Site, Cradle Mountain, Dove Lake, Strahan and the snow fields of Ben Lomond National Park ... just to name a few. Australia is indeed the land of plenty and Tasmania, and more specifically the Hobart region, lay testament to this fact. If you have the opportunity to visit this amazing part of our world I promise that you will not be disappointed... if truth be told, I foresee that you too will fall in love with this unique and wondrous slice of heaven on earth. Go on, spend some time in heaven and visit Hobart...you know you want to!
