The best of the Limestone Coast, Wednesday, 02 July 2008

Written by Ron B

From the moment you enter Mt Gambier, you know; this area is different from the rest of Australia. As soon as you see and visit the hanging gardens of the "Ulmphstone Sinkhole". Travel further into Mt Gambier and see the fantastic "blue lake". No matter what you are told, the emerald blue of the water is unbelievable, you are left awe struck at the colour and sight of the water.
Leaving Mt Gambier, travel north to the Coonawarra District. The light clay coloured soil, indicates that you entering a fine red wine district.
Stop at the many wineries for a tasteing. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Majority of the wineries provide picnic facilities, and are well known table wines of Australia.
This also includes the Padthaway District.
The road is straight and narrow, continuing north, you arrive at the Naracoorte Caves.
These caves are World Heritage Listed, the staff knowledgable and enthuastic, viewing Australian dinosours, ready to answer any question you have to ask. Fantastic.
After leaving the Naracoorte Caves, we continued north in South Australia till we came across the town of Keith.
Keith appeared to be in the centre of South Australia, it is the 'typical' Australian town, everyone knows everyone else. The local store was a family name, and, hey, everything closes early. We hit the local hotel, for a meal. The best steak, I have tasted. It was all so fresh, I have never seen a meal that big... country charm.
We continued on from Keith, to Strathalbyn, but thats another story.....
Travelling around Australia...fantastic

Mount Gambier, Sunday, 29 June 2008

Mount Gambier is the second largest city outside of Adelaide in SA. The scenic drive from Adelaide is magnificant as you can follow the ocean coast road form Adelaide. There are numerous places to see along the way so I foung the drive (recently) most enjoyable. I enjord being able to stop and look at the famous icon "Larry the Lobster" in Robe and the majic of the sea in Beachport. Once in Mount Gambier I went up the tower and could see the magic of the entire surrounding towns plus of course the famous Blue Lake. The peolpe are most friendly and happy to share their knowledge and point out local as well as historical events. I also travelled on into Victoria to Portland and Hamilton, before returning to Mount Gambier, also great for the shopping enthuiastics. I then travelled via Penola and Naracorte for the return journey back to Adelaide, more magic scenery.

Robe is the ideal holiday destination for couples, singles, families and even pets! It is ideal in summer with the azure bay for safe swimming and also the ocean beach for swimming and surfing. There are great walks any time of year and the seafood is glorious - fresh crays from April to November, and other fish all year round. The town has many beautiful old heritage listed buildings with the cray fishing fleet being located in the central boat harbour. There is a hugte range of accommodation to suit all budgets from caravan parks who also accommodate pets to holiday house rental, motels and hotels and luxury retreats. Nearby is the world famous Coonawarra wine region but why would you bother going there when you can sit overlooking the boat harbour, eating fabulous seafood and drinking a wonderful Cape Jaffa white?

Larry the lobster was a constant theme in my childhood and Kingston SE is still renownd for 'Larry The Lobster'. Its the first major icon to welcome those entering town from the Princess Highway. Endless summer days at the beach, local No 1. fish and chip shop in SA two years running, tourists and inviting sunsets can only win over the hearts of all ages- young and old.

With surrounding wineries and local townships in arms reach, Kingston is a idilic place to base ones self for that well earned weekend away or a few weeks re-energising ones self. Whether single, couple or family, there is something to tickle each ones fancy. Whether its boating, fishing, swimming, surfing, wine sampling, or feasting on local seafood produce, there is an avenue to persue. There are antique shops to browse through and places like the Lighthouse to climb so plenty to keep most busy for hours on end. There are a number of great fishing spots so why not stop, chuck a line in and just relax! Many simply seek a quiet and stress free getaway and Kingston will definately come through with the goods there!

With a fishing marina available, those who are looking at a fishing getaway, this provides a safe launching area and allows you to mingle with many of the locals- its main economy includes fishing so perfect oppertunity to scope out the perfect fishing spots!

Whether its camping, caravaning, or something a little more intimate such as a B and B or a hotel/motel, there are several to chose from. Whatever your preference, there is definately something to accomodate your comfort needs.

There are a number of parks around the township that provide BBQ facilities so why not stoll on down and enjoy the fresh air and open surroundings while enjoying a bite to eat. Whether you enjoy a BBQ or prefere something a little more upmarket, there are a few nice restaraunts around to cater for your needs.

With friendly faces to welcome all that visit, one can only leave with the mindset that they will definately return to this coastal town on their next getaway in the near future.

Kingston SE- getaway relax and enjoy!

Do I love the mix of ultramodern beachouses and old well loved shacks? Do I love the food especially the very fresh seafood? Do I love the art and crafts? Do I love the vineyards and boutique wineries around Robe? Do I love sitting in front of an open fire, reading a good book, looking out over an everchanging ocean? Do I think that the people who live here need to keep quiet about there little bit of paradise? Hell YES....... When can I go back there?
