Paradise on earth, Monday, 30 June 2008

Base yourself in cairns, and pick up a car for a couple of days - head north up to Port Douglas. Duck into the Mirage Resort just to check out their pool - phenomenal! Keep driving north - stop at Mossman Gorge, have a picnic, wander amongst soem of teh worlds oldest rainforest, sip the fresh water, or even go for a swim. Keep driving up to the Daintree River - do a cruise and do some croc spotting. Go beyond teh rivert to where the "rainforest meets teh reef" - truly one of the most spectaular natural places on earth! indulge and stay at a hotel up here for a bight or two, or there is budget accomodation available as well. But def stay here to soak in the wonder of it all.
Another trip from Cairns is the waterfall circuit - travel through the Atherton Tablelands, stopping at dairies along the way for some cheese and yoghurt tasting, and see some of the worlds prettiest tropical waterfalls.
Hop on a day cruise out to the reef and snorkel or dive one of the 7 natural wonders of this world. Truly the best coral and snorkelling in the wolrd! Maybe spot a sting ray or reef shark while looking for Nemo! Or perhaps even saty at one of the lush tropical island escapes and sense a paradise all of your own.
Lots of accomodation from backpackers through to top end resorts for honeymooners. Food galore for everyone on any budget, freindly locals, warm weather (just avoid wet season - Nov- March - very humid and heavy tropical showers).
A trip here can be as relaxing or as adrenaline packed as you like - lots of water sports, rafting, trekking, wildlife spotting to be had, at the same time lots of beautiful beaches and cruises! Lots of resorts with day spa's and pampering, and lots of backpackers with clubs and cheap eats and drinks. the choice is yours - either way you wont be dissapointed!
Tropical North Queensland Croc-hunting!, Sunday, 06 July 2008

"There it is!", shouted my husband, turning the car sharply into a parking area almost hidden in the lush rainforest.
A short path fringed with huge, bright tropical plants and flowers led us to a reception area where we were welcomed immediately by a motherly Mrs Belcher, who plied us with delicious, hot coffee and tea, outfitted us with ballooning raincoats for our wander through the dripping rainforest on her doorstep and almost but not quite, patted us on our bottoms as she sent us off towards the river and into the very capable hands of her husband Bruce, croc tour operator, guide and commentator.
Stepping into Bruce's very ship-shape new cruise boat, we found binoculars on every seat. Did this indicate that our croc sightings, if any, would be distant, I wondered? Emphatically no! Within 10 minutes of the boat slipping quietly away from Bruce's jetty, we were seeing crocs. Huge crocs! Very, very close crocs; so close you could see the yellow-green colour of their ferocious eyes and imagine the terrible shock of a chomp from the immensely powerful, yellowed teeth, all to a background of Bruce's calm voice telling us about his world.
A gorgeous, green tree snake, coiled high above us, was more unsettling to me than the crocs, when Bruce slid the boat quietly underneath it. Not dangerous, he reassured us, but I could only imagine it dropping from the tree to the tune of my own petrified shrieking!
That was the point at which I decided the Amazon could eat its heart out. Cruising quietly along the Daintree River, completely enfolded by the vibrant, towering rainforest and under Bruce's expert guidance spotting rare and beautiful birds and wildlife; for a brief hour as much at one with nature as our guide was every day of his life, I felt so lucky, so privileged to be there and to have the chance to share it. Best $22 per person we had spent on a tour in our lives!
So, wherever you are in this country, get going on the adventure holiday of a life-time. Hop on a plane to Cairns pronto! -Yes, go out to the Great Barrier Reef, snorkel, dive, sail, cruise and flop onto divine beaches, see reef fish, turtles and dolphins, go to the beautiful Atherton Tablelands, to Kuranda and back on the spectacular train and Skyrail trip. Go to iconic Port Douglas with its gorgeous 4 Mile beach and pretty port and village. Be moved by stunning Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the sea and bathe in crystal-clear stream waters on a walk through awe-inspiring Mossman Gorge.
But, by crikey, don't forget to take a croc cruise on the Daintree River. Have your own croc-credible adventure!
