TOOWOOMBA, GOLDEN WEST CAPITAL, Thursday, 17 July 2008

Written by Morris

Visit Toowoomba, the pretty capital of Queensland's Golden West. It is situated just a 90 minute drive from Brisbane. As you reach the top of the Toowoomba Range , you'll be amazed at the beauiful green city and mountain fresh air. Your eyes will take in beautifully kept golfing greens, wide tree lined streets, easy parking, beautiful churches and historic buildings.

Fresh flowers welcome you as they bloom in the many parks and gardens. City life and country hospitality meet together for a very pleasant relaxing experience. Traditional shops mix with large modern shopping centres to make a great retail experience. Cafes offer genuine smiles. There is a good choice of quality restaurants. The city's Empire Theatre has been beautifully restored and is well worth a visit. You can relax at friendly markets or go for country drives. If you want more adventure, try skydiving.

As you enter Toowoomba , stop at the information centre in James Street to find a great list of places to see. These include the German cuckoo clock centre, art galleries, the Cobb & Co museum, Rimfire Winery, and Preston Park Wines. Take a day trip to the Jondaryan Woolshed or the Bunya Mountains. Ask any of the locals, they'll help you find your way to these great attractions.

Don't miss Picnic Point, just 2 km from the city centre. You'll enjoy the crisp mountain air and look look down toward Brisbane over the beautiful lush landscape.

September is CARNIVAL OF FLOWERS time in Toowoomba. This includes a traditional country street parade, floats are decorated in fresh flowers. Many parks and private gardens are also open for visitors. Easter is also a great time to visit Toowoomba, the city erupts in carnival atmosphere called EASTERFEST when it hosts Australia's largest Christian music festival. This is a great event with many family activities, many camp in the beautiful Queens Park, while others choose one of the many quality motels.

There is a good bus sevice from Brisbane via Greyhound or Toowoomba Transit Coaches. Don't forget to book on Wotif before you go.

Toowoomba has something to offer for everyone. From the famous Toowoomba races in March to the food and wine festivals in spring, there are many attractions and sight seeing programs on offer. Toowoomba is wonderful becasue of the neighbouring communities that add to its charm. Families can enjoy picnics along the range, horse riding tours, chocolate factory tours, sunsets to warm any heart and the best local produce grown in Australia. Toowoomba really does have it all!
Toowoomba - Mystic City of Love, Tuesday, 01 July 2008

Mystic city, in the fog (2008)

Having not ventured to this town before,
I had no idea what to expect.
Not a typical romantic location,
I held nothing but hope and respect.

When we arrived into town I was immediately surprised,
It was smaller and more intimate than Brisbane, but with more pride.
Relaxed and comforting, 3 years had passed since we'd been a couple.
But alas the hotel had forgotten.

In town for only one night and with an early morning to follow,
I trusted that our fate would soon follow.
We woke, apart, at an hour suited only to those keen to fish in the river.
The wind was blowing, the rain kept flowing and the end to a marathon was not in vision.

Registering for the annual run we were surprised to hear,
That few ventured above the border to run; for fun?
Unable to see 5 metres ahead,
The wind and fog encouraged us to forge ahead.

Had the rain not turned to steam as it hit our shoulders,
We were certain to have become much colder.
As I finished and felt my legs as they burned,
It was nothing as I witnessed the satisfaction that my true love had earned.

The pride that I felt as she crossed the line,
Was surpassed by the feeling that I knew she was mine.
On the long drive home, back to the southern state,
I wondered as to when, next we would date.

Never had I dreamt the result of the trip,
But Toowoomba to all, I would certainly tip.

Toowoomba beautiful Toowoomba, Tuesday, 01 July 2008

Toowoomba is on the top of the Great Dividing Range about 2000 feet above sea level. The air is always clean and fresh, making Summer refreshing and Winter brisk enough to put a rose on your cheek. However it is Autumn and Spring that I like best in Toowoomba. You really feel the change in the seasons. Toowoomba has many deciduous trees so Autumn you see the colours and the falling leaves and of course Spring bring the fresh renewal of buds, flowers and new leaves. In September they have the Carnival of Flowers which is the longest running festival of its kind in Australia. Home gardeners open their properties to visitors to see all their hard work come to fruition in beautiful annual flower beds and exquisite garden designs. Don't miss it - Toowoomba is said to be the most English inland town in Australia with its beautiful tree lined streets, extensive open parklands and mountain edge views back to Brisbane.
