Hervey Bay

The Fraser Coast is the gateway to World Heritage Listed Fraser Island, and the southern entry to the World Heritage listed Lady Elliot Island on the Great Barrier Reef. Just over an hour and a half’s flight from Sydney or an easy 30 minute flight from Brisbane, the Fraser Coast is an ideal holiday destination, with major cities such as Hervey Bay and Maryborough, and numerous coastal village and historic towns.

Stay in Hervey Bay this weekend!

Hervey Bay, stepping stone to Frazer Island, Sunday, 29 June 2008

Written by PA Mangelsdorf

Hervey Bay, a wonderfully hospitable, easy to navigate around coastal town, a stepping stone to the magnificence of Frazer Island. From the time you are picked up by a local bus company and transferred across the Great Sandy Strait to the Island, you experience nothing but wonder and awe at the beauty of the landscape.

The chance to spot dolphins on the boat trip keeps ones eyes glued to the surrounding water; and once on the Island and being driven in a four-wheeled drive bus through quite amazing landscape, - with time to walk through and see up close the amazing plants, trees and coloured sand, - it is quite breath-taking - and a photographers delight!

Further opportunity to take a short flight over the island gives opportunity to see dolphins and perhaps whales if lucky; but not to be beaten, was the amazing trip back to Hervey Bay just as the sun was setting and the township was starting to come to life.

A day can be finished off a really exciting and beautiful note, with the choice of a number of particularly good restaurants to choose from for dinner. The seafood is simply delicious, well prepared and presented, and enjoyed in a particularly friendly environment. We loved the interesting touches displayed in the restaurants, that said something of the interests of the owners, and their awareness of places and event around Australia, other than where they were running their businesses.

A once in a lifetime trip, certainly well worth repeating many times over.

Hervey Bay - Something for everyone!, Thursday, 03 July 2008

Hervey Bay, you can't go past it for a great holiday or even a short weekend break away. The water has no rips or dangerous undertows, just lovely calm clear sea water with an abundance of sea life. Walking is the best way to see everything and you can walk right along the foreshore on the Esplanade and take in the gorgeous sea views, or maybe have a nice coffee while breathing the fresh sea air.

Head to the Urangan pier, you'll need a bit of energy for this one because it's over 700m long! It was originally used in the early 1900's to transport sugar to the waiting ships for export overseas. Pelicans, schools of garfish, trevally and silvery mackerel as well as sting ray are plentiful. They use these fish for bait for even bigger fish like Bluefin tuna! And if you're here between July and November you'll even see Humpback whales that travel here to give birth to their calves in the tranquil waters of the Bay.

Don't fancy fishing for your dinner? A great place to dine that won't cost you the earth is the Hervey Bay RSL. It's a massive club that caters for all tastes, the food is great and is good value but you will need to get in early during school holidays as it gets packed!
If you're after something a bit more romantic, you can't beat the range of restaurants at the marina. Now that's what I call food with a view!

Accommodation is plentiful and caters for all tastes from budget hotels to luxury self-contained apartments. Stay on the esplanade with a view of the Bay or maybe at the marina and watch the luxury boats come in.

There are lots of places to shop from known brands to local arts and crafts and of course plentiful souvenir shops, plus there are regular Sunday markets where you can snap up an original bargain!

Take a ferry ride to nearby Fraser Island and if you have a 4WD there's plenty of places to explore including the crystal clear aqua waters of Lake McKenzie - icy cold but stunningly beautiful! The kids will enjoy a 'floating ride' downstream along Eli Creek, walk to the top then float your way back! And if you're really lucky, you might even see a dingo or two!

Hervey Bay has it all and I love it!

An awe inspiring nature experience, Sunday, 29 June 2008

My favourite place in Australia is Hervey Bay because it is a little coastal country town where you can experience one of the most amazing wonders of the world. Take a trip out on one of the many tourist boats to meet some of the biggest gentle giants on earth. Watch as these cumbersome creatures do barrel roles before your eyes, slap the waters with their dorsal fins and stare at the visitor's to their ocean homeland. In fact they come so close at times; that you feel you could just reach out and rub their stomachs as they meander by. There final performance in parting is so awe-inspiring, their bulky bodies defy gravity as they breach the waters and wave goodbye. An opportunity everyone should try to experience at least once in their lives. Not only is there whales but also the white sands of Fraser Island with their coastal rainforest, wild animals, fishing and swimming. Be escorted around for a day or so by tour guides in search of wild dingo's or pack the four wheel drive and the family for a relaxing remote island holiday. There are plenty of accommodation places to suit any budget. Deluxe waterfront apartments with exceptional service or backpacker's hostels offering good meals and comfortable lodgings at reasonable prices. Once you've experienced your full of nature spend some time relaxing reading the latest bestseller or catching up on some long awaited zzz's in the sun on the beach. Or With sunscreen of course! If you are without a car try hiring one of the local mopeds and take yourself exploring around town dropping in at many of the local nick knack shops to find a suitable souvenirs for your memories. Hervey Bay is certainly a place not to be overlooked in the months from August to October.
Humpbacks in Hervey Bay, Monday, 30 June 2008

Situated in God's Country, Queensland, is the magnificent Hervey Bay. Humpback Whales migrate to Hervey Bay where you can see them play and frolic. All other whale watching is merely following the whales migrate, while at the Bay you see the beautiful area they decide to stop and stay. If it's good enough for the whales, it's good enough for you! This is nature at it's best, without having to go bush. Beach and sea lovers too can have a nature holiday.
