Bargara and the Multi-coloured Dream Cloak, Thursday, 10 July 2008

Written by Robin Nicholls

Remember childhood holidays by the sea? Close your eyes and you're back there; from your beach shack squatting above the beach, you tumble over golden sandhills and scamper to the shop for ice-creams; long days of summer seem to spin on forever and you never want to leave.

Snap your eyes open and, incredibly, it's all still there! Pretty, absolute beachfront village of Bargara is a State award-winner with its leafy, pedestrian-friendly upgrade and sun-soaked atmosphere. It's the perfect holiday destination, having exactly the right mix of excellent restaurants, cafes, boutiques and accommodation for every pocket, most offering beachfront seaviews.

With its long swathe of golden, silky sand, Kelly's Beach is a surf-caster's dream, but also sports a safe swimming lagoon, so clear you'll delight in the tickle and shimmer of sub-tropical fish around your ankles.

Hang on,there's more! With a flick of Bargara's colourful cloak, you'll be teeing up on the green right under your nose, revelling in the rich choice of world-class golf courses, clubs and country clubs in the area, most boasting breath-taking coastal views.

Flick again and you are a few kilometres north at Mon Repos, world-famous turtle monitoring station and sanctuary. On a guided night-walk on the beach under velvety-black, starry skies, you'll marvel silently as these champions of the sea lumber ashore in a once in eight year cycle to traverse the sandhills and dig holes to lay their eggs.

Another flick of the gorgeous cloak and you're hitting the blue in a fast catamaran, departing from exquisite Seventeen-Seventy, a two hour drive north of Bargara, where Captain Cook is said to have first stepped ashore in Australia. You can snorkel, dive, swim or just laze around at Lady Musgrave or eco-friendly Lady Elliot, southern-most islands of the Great Barrier Reef. Tour operators will get you to the boat and back.

It's nearly time to head home but not without one last flick of Bargara's cloak. Ahhh! You are drowning in brown on a visit to Bundaberg's world-famous distillery, where you can take a fascinating tour, tucking a bottle of Bundy Rum under your arm as you reluctantly bid Bargara,"adieu","farewell", "au revoir" or "hasta la vista", but not "good-bye", because, like all who visit, you know you will be back.

Bargara - The Hidden Gem, Sunday, 29 June 2008

Bargara is a place many people are yet to discover. Just a short drive from Bundaberg, it is a coastal destination with accomodation to suit all budgets, from high-rise resorts to simple camp-sites in clean, well-appointed parks.
For those looking for something to do, you can go diving off the nearby islands such as Lady Musgrave, throw in a line and try your luck at fishing; or take the whole family to watch Loggerhead and Green turtles hatching at nearby Mon Repos beach. There really is something for everyone - from couples to families.
For those who are yet to discover this beautiful place, I would strongly recommend a visit. You won't be disappointed.

Bargara by the Sea, Sunday, 29 June 2008

When I bought my first brand new car in 2001 I wanted to take it for a long drive. I found Bargara & spent the night in a time share place by the water. I fell in love with it because of its beauty and peacefulness. Again in 2004 I was lucky enough to stay for a couple of nights as the rest day was there from a bike ride I was doing. My friend and I sat on the foreshore and drank champagne and ate fish and chips. The tranquility, the easy going lifestyle, the food, the weather, the beach made me wish I lived there. I did another nine day bike ride two years later and on the way back I camped in a caravan park in Bargara. To watch the sunrise over the water whilst having a cup of coffee in the still of the day in such a beautiful place I will never forget. Bargara is the place for me.

Relax, breathe, look at the water and the sky. A part of the Ocean where you can swim safely. Access is easy ,not big crowds and the water is warm. The contrast of volcanic rocks, white sand, blue ocean, blue sky and the breadfruit trees is bautiful and invigorating. Refereshing to the spirit.

It's the beach to be whether your swimming, sunning, or watching the sun set. Such a beautiful place with it's long beaches and favourite family spots has this beach list as Tops.
