Snowfields of NSW, Monday, 30 June 2008

Written by Paul Williams

If pure, clear, brisk air and vistas to fill many mindless work days with wonderful, adventurous memories, then the snow fields of New South Wales is your destination!

From learner to advanced, our family had a ball. We placed our little ones into a day care with a difference. While they were not just cared for but had a fabulous memory of playing in the snow, learning to ski and having an adventure from a young age - my wife and I had the wonderful escape and freedom to enjoy the magic of the snowfields.

To careen across mountain tops, stop and just absorb the beautiful panorama of snow capped trees, frozen waterways and the sheer beauty of simple snow falling around you, this is what my understanding of a romantic interlude includes.

Yes it gets cold, but to see your partner with the red glow of cold on her cheeks and nose, but the rest of her body wrapped in warmth and her eyes alight with the wonder and excitement of the moment! Even now years later I still recall the magic of that experience and I recall it with a sense of nostalgia and joy as I tenderly remember sitting with her as we rested while taking a chairlift ride to the top of yet another magnificent view.

Laughter as we fell time and again in a clownlike way, serenity as we sat quietly enjoying gaining our breath and simply taking it all in, romance as we held hands like young lovers, and exhaustion when at the end of some hard runs we would avail ourselves of a steaming cup of hot chocolate in one of a number of cafes settled in some remote picturesque location strategically placed to capture and enlarge the magic of the mountains.

As novice turns to experience the world of the mountains grows to include treking on skis through tree lined ridges, capturing the occasional glimpse of some wildlife at peace in their surroundings and those ever challenging black runs that brings pure exhilaration when finally you succeed in simply not falling over.

At days end, as daylight starts to ebb and your children are reunited with you again with cold cheeks and frozen noses, that is when the stories begin, and the laughter and joking doesn't end until sleep finally catches up with weary bodies and all have earnt the rest of champions.

It's Winter and while you might think it's cold north of Sydney, wait till you feel the crisp clean air on your cheeks, or cold snow in your face if you dare!
As soon as I smell the hot wax, I feel like I'm somewhere else, and the scenery makes the mood just right.
This is not just for skiers or boarders, everyone can have some fun from todlers to grannies - A mate of mine injured himself on the first day, and proceeded to tell me how much fun he had for the week NOT skiing!!
My daughter went to ski kindy in 1997 and now I enjoy skiing the slopes with her and my partner. I also love to introduce new people to the adventure, whether it be on the slopes, letting that coffe or snappes warm your insides, shopping for a novilty, enjoying friendly chat or dancing to a different beat at night!
Here your worries find it hard to compete! Enjoy!

Where else in Australia can you build a snowman, hike through the Snow Daisys, explore caves, climb to our highest mountain, water ski, fish or just kick back and enjoy great food or even taste locally made schnapps? The region has it all, whatever the season!

Mt Kosciuszko is so beautiful at any time of the year, in any season and in any weather. The 13km return walk/climb to the top is particularly worthwhile on a clear day and you feel a sense of achievement when you arrive. The air is crisp and fresh and its a trip suited to people of all ages and of reasonable fitness. If you're breathing - go for it!
