The town has a fascinating history having been called "Belfast" when first settled by Irish immigrants around 1810. A stroll down any of its streets will reveal quaint cottages, old shops and ancestral homes listed on the national heritage register, and historical signs guide you from point to point through the town. Even the monumental Norfolk Island pine trees that line the streets are historically protected. The historical society gives visitors an insight into the town's past which centres on the town's port, which is still operating as a commercial venture today.
A stroll along the Moyne River's port and wharf area is a must-do with boats of all shapes and sizes moored all year round. If you're lucky you might see a local angler offloading the catch of the day as several commercial fishing enterprises operate from the Port of Port Fairy. You can even sample their fresh product in the fish and chip shop along the river.
Gastronomique pleasures abound in Port Fairy with several high-end restaurants offering amazing eating experiences, and the first weekend in July reserved as the Winter Weekend Festival's food and wine weekend. This weekend offers cooking classes, local produce, a farmers' market, full Devonshire teas and special gourmet dinners among other tasty treats. If it's something more casual you're after, the town has plenty of cafes and pubs offering local produce in ever-changing menus.
Port Fairy is also a wonderful place for families, with beautiful beaches and activities from kite flying to horse riding on offer. The range of accommodation is broad - from caravan parks to five star - so families of all shapes and sizes are sure to find something to suit them. During summer the Moyneyana Festival offers a plethora of children's activities that go right through the holidays and will keep your little ones entertained.
Speaking of festivals, the town hosts many including the internationally acclaimed Port Fairy Folk Festival. Others include the Winter Weekends series with a different theme over four weekends, the Spring Music Festival featuring classical music, and the Ex Libris literary festival with books, authors' talks and workshops. There's something for everyone.
Port Fairy really is a destination that offers something for everyone and the spectacular coastal scenery is a bonus!
